England’s New Towns: Letchworth Garden CityAccording to new research conducted by Lloyds TSB, properties for sale in Letchworth and other new towns in England and Wales are at their most affordable since the housing market peaked in 2007.

Our series on England’s new towns continues with a look at Letchworth properties for sale. Along with Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth is one of the earliest new towns established in the county of Hertfordshire.

Popular with commuters, Letchworth Garden City is good for those looking for regular services to London King’s Cross and a more affordable alternative to London property prices.

Pros of Buying Property for Sale in Letchworth

Sale properties in Letchworth come with a variety of benefits. The original idea was to provide an area which combined elements of both city and country living. Letchworth is considered as a good example of town planning. Tree-lined streets, spacious Edwardian houses with parking and gardens, good schools and low crime rates make the area a big hit with families. If you want to be surrounded by greenery and live in a spacious home, sale properties in Letchworth will appeal.

Fast trains take around 30 minutes to reach London King’s Cross, which makes the town popular with commuters.

Heathrow is 45 minutes away, and Stansted and Luton airports can be reached in 30 minutes. Drivers can connect easily to the A1(M) and M25.

Letchworth has a compact town centre, with a large Morrisons, high street chain stores and a number of independent shops and cafes.

House prices are more affordable here than they are in nearby towns such as Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield.

Cons of Buying Property for Sale in Letchworth

It’s not great if you want good nightlife. The town had a big Quaker community back in the early 1900s and as a consequence, has a notable absence of pubs and nightlife. There was a ban on selling alcohol in public places when the town was first established. There are a couple of pubs in the town centre and the Broadway cinema, but that’s about as good as it gets.

There’s not a lot going on after dark. Nor is the town a particularly cultural place. If you want art, culture and nightlife, you’ll need to travel into London. Having said all that, the lack of nightlife options is regarded as a plus by some.
